Are you in the Light?

By Maureen Kennedy Macel

At 9pm on a late December Sunday night I stood outside of St. Bonaventure waiting for Ryan and Nora to pick me up after my program was complete. It was an unseasonably warm night and a light rain had just finished misting. I stood on the sidewalk near a lamppost in what looked like it was in the light. “Ryan will see me here,” I thought, since I was in the light. A few moments later I thought to go to the other side of the lamppost and onto the edge of the driveway so that when Ryan did stop it would be easier for him to turn around. I went to the other side and stood and immediately realized that this new spot was where the light was truly shining.

I turned around and looked at my previous spot on the sidewalk, and yes, some light was shining there, but it was a shadowy light because the light first had to get thru some bare branches of a tree to reach it.

Only when I was in the true light did I see that I hadn’t been standing in the best place.

*Lightbulb* and a “Thank you God for that moment.” followed.

On my faith journey I continue to grow towards God, make room for Him, do what He is calling me to do. But I know that where I am and where I can be is the difference between the one side of that lamppost and the other. I am out of the darkness. I am in His light. But I have a ways to go and grow before I come fully into His light. And I am sure that His full light is beautiful, even more than anything I could ever imagine it to be. And I am blessed to know that I want to live in His light - now and forever.

Sometimes God gives you a “Thank you for saying “Yes” to me.” moment. He doesn’t need to remind you that saying “Yes” to Him is what He calls you to do. But He loves you and wants to help you continue to live and grow in the Light and so He shines a little thanks down. I thank God for the moments He gives me thoughts about lampposts and light and how well (or poorly) I am doing what He calls me to do compared to where he is calling me to be.

“Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!” Your face, Lord, do I seek.” - Psalm 27:8

“Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.” - Psalm 25:5

Let God Embrace You. Embrace Him Back.

by Maureen Kennedy Macel

One time during mass Fr. Joe paused right before Holy Communion and addressed everyone saying, “As you come up for Communion really allow God to embrace you.” It was a beautiful interjection that of course left me thinking and reflecting for awhile.

It was beautiful in its own right because God is always there ready to embrace you. It’s really a matter of you being willing to let Him embrace you. But then I realized an important piece was missing to this sentiment.

God can embrace us day after day and when you let Him embrace you get to experience the joy of His peaceful, freeing, perfect and loving embrace. It was nice to be reminded of “Hey Maureen, I’m here waiting for you. Let me hug you!” But that’s not where it stops - you need to go one step further. You need to Embrace Him Back.

Embracing Him Back requires you not only let God in and into your heart and soul where He can fill you with His love, but that you open up your arms and fully open your heart back to Him and truly accept His love and that He is calling you His and wants you to live for Him.

A one-sided hug is not as satisfying as a two-sided one.

I talked about this with Bridgette and we realized this same situation plays out in our own lives. We love hugging Nora. We often chase her around requesting hugs. Nora will run around and be her amazing independent self and sometimes when you ask her for a hug she says yes but sometimes she says no. And when she says “Yes” and lets us hug her we are filled with great joy. And Nora is funny because she often lets you hug her but doesn’t raise her arms up to hug you back  - it’s like she knows we really, really, really want that hug and so she agrees to let us hug her, but she is just doing it to make us happy. But sometimes when we hug her she hugs us back and when she gives us that hug we are filled with such great joy that our hearts could burst.

This is just a microcosm of an experience compared to who God is and how He wishes to embrace us. His love is infinite and truly incomprehensible, but being able to relate what this might be like for God and His hopes for me - it makes me feel so loved. God loves me so much that all He longs to do is embrace me. And He patiently waits for me to embrace Him back. There is no good reason to not lift my arms, open my heart, and enter into His embrace. And luckily for me (and for you!) it’s a hug that does not ever need to actually end. And the good news is God doesn’t hug us one by one - I don’t have to wait for Him to finish hugging you before He can hug me. We are blessed because we have a God who embraces each and everyone one of us every moment. We just need to remember that He is there and that we can turn to Him and stay in His embrace. And then with God’s grace hopefully we will find ourselves open enough to embrace Him back and smart enough to never let go.

As for me getting to embrace Nora - well that looks like I will be a long life of chasing her and waiting for those fleeting beautiful moments when she let’s me hug her and she hugs me back.

How do you handle a challenge?

...so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known ... Eph 3:10

Today Pope Francis called on humanity to respect the environment, and it's angering some Catholic Christians and Christians. But what is your faith if it doesn't challenge you?  If something in the Christian faith challenges us, good!  It's supposed to!  When we apply Jesus' teachings to our lives, sometimes we find that we're the disciples, the good followers. And other times, we find that we're the pharisees, the hypocrites or those who are driven by ego. If our faith doesn't challenge us, then we are in danger of making ourselves into our own gods -- that what we say and feel and think is the Truth.

Instead, we should take our disagreements to the Lord in prayer. "God opposes the proud but bestows favor on the humble" 1 Peter 5:5.

God gave us a heart to love and a mind to reason. Ask the Lord to move your heart with his wisdom. Ask him to form your conscience. There is a place for everyone in the Church, the Body of Christ. So even when we disagree with the teachings of the Church, we are right to be open to the "Word of God, the teaching of the Church, the Holy Spirit, and the advice of wise people" (CCC 1783-88, 1799-1800).

Let us make sure our words and actions are rooted in love.

Lent 2015: Week 6 Reflections

"A Good Life" presents a special Lenten blog post by Maureen Kennedy Macel (Week 6):

Day 37 Thursday March 26 - [P] Mercy

RO37: We need this God who is beyond the pains of our earth. We have this savior that says, “Hold on to me. I’ve got your back. I’m for you, not against you.” // In those moments of suffering ..if you know God already you will see Him. Maybe not standing right in front of you, but ...God is there. He will make  himself present to you// Get to know God now because those things are coming down the road. // Find your strength in the Lord and He’ll raise you up in those moments when no other human being can.

Genesis 17: 3-9
God also said to Abraham: “On your part, you and your descendants after you must keep my covenant throughout the ages.”

John 8: 51-59
Jesus said to the Jews: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death.”

I often ask God to have mercy on me for my failings. And even though I can read/hear countless verses from the Bible about how I am to show mercy to others just as God shows it to me (The Lord’s Prayer Luke 11: 1-4; The Good Samaritan Luke 10: 25-37; The Prodigal Son Luke 15: 11-32; The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant Matthew 18: 21-35) it can still be really hard to show that mercy when the moment comes for me to do so.

In the moment I are called to show mercy I often let myself get in the way because I am the center of my world. I am the most important thing and how I feel is what matters and what I think is right and just is what is right and just. But I am wrong. Very wrong.

The Bible is filled with parables but they are not just meant to be lessons all wrapped up in pretty verses for me to listen to, think I know, but then fail to live out when the time comes. These words are supposed to guide my actions especially in those moments when I find it hardest to forgive.

It can be hard work to forgive those that have trespassed against us. I definitely can find myself saying, “I know. I know. That is what I’m supposed to do. But in this case I am definitely justified not forgiving because look at what’s been done!” God doesn’t say it’s easy to live this way. But he calls us to try because we shouldn’t let the sin of another become a sin on our own hearts.

Day 38 Friday March 27 - [F] Do not listen to music in the car

RO38: We’re not meant to live this life on our own. We’re not meant to go at this alone. That’s not how God created it. Suffering and hard times are going to come in everyone’s lives. It’s going to happen. The question is are we able to take that suffering, to take the panoramic view, and to see it as an opportunity not only in our relationship with God but to grow in our relationship with others. To be able to step outside of ourselves. And to find that hope and be able to trust in God’s plan for us again. // Our challenge is to be able to look at the hardships in our lives, those times of sufferings, and see them as opportunities to grow. // In turning to God you will find the hope and the peace and the joy that you never thought possible.

Jeremiah 20: 10-13
But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph.

John 10: 31-42
Even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.

I’ve been reflecting on prayers recently and praying - saying “standard” prayers or reading those of others or thinking of my own. And instead of writing up a long-winded rambling about my personal experience with prayer (which I did and then deleted because it definitely was long-winded, rambling, and I’m not even sure if it had a point?) -- and which prayers I find most moving to my soul -- God gave me some time to pause, step back, and just focus on this one thing:

God wants us to pray. He wants us to mean it - say/think the words and feel them, believe them, and trust in Him. Sometimes it is hard to clear your head and focus and really commit yourself to that moment of prayer. But try, and continue trying. Because sometimes it is the prayer that is important, but always it is praying that is important.

Take some time to talk to God. And then take some time to listen.

Day 39 Saturday March 28 - [S] Deliver your food bank items

RO39: You’re not alone. When Jesus was here on this earth he went through betrayal. // Jesus knows what it’s like to be alone. // God can give you the grace to forgive. // In our own lives God has a vision for us. Do we miss out on that vision because when we are betrayed by people we allow it to take away from really experiencing the love of God from really seeing all the love that God has for us. // Look at betrayal in light of the cross. That out of the cross came life. The life that God wants to give you. Will you accept the life that He wants to give you?

Ezekial 37: 21-28
I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

John 11: 45-56
So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we going to do?  This man is performing many signs. If we leave him alone, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our land and our nation.”

I have a box of food bank items in my entry way. They’ve been there for about one month waiting. I somewhat intended to deliver them today, though when given the opportunity to make other plans I did that and so never got around to delivering to it.

I mean, I can justify that I could wait and just do it some other time. But I feel like that is a running theme in my life. I have good (or decent-ish) intentions and then just fail a bit on the follow through.

I did spent the day in a great way - one which God I think approves. But still I was to do this thing for Him but just kind of dropped it because I was focusing on this other thing.

I mean, this other thing was a prayer retreat with my mom Ruth and Bridgette in Uniontown at The Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great. So I did spend over half of my day in a prayerful place (followed by more “Me & God” time at mass) and it was amazing to connect with God.

But sometimes prayer and living for God isn’t just about our internal journey; it needs to also be one of community.

I often do get so caught up in my prayerfulness and focusing on me and my personal relationship with God that I neglect the external -- which is basically everything else in the world and stuff that I know God does want me to care about. Like donating to a food bank.

And so I hope to get around to dropping off my “Food Pantry” box. But until then at least it is in my entry way gently reminding me (mocking me) that I need to do a better job of actively helping others.

May 11 Update: Funny how God comes to you when you fail to go to Him -- I received a postcard in the mail saying the Post-Office was doing a food drive. All I needed to do was to place a bag of items by my mailbox and the mailman would pick it up. So… Thanks for the help, God!

Day 40 Palm Sunday March 29 - [P] Peace

RO40: A fast is supposed to help you gain control, self-mastery over the passions of your life. Sit down with the Holy Spirit and say “Lord, you tell me, what is something you want me to fast on during this Lenten experience?” // Real prayer. Consider making a dedicated time to pray. // Get into the scriptures. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you which book of the scriptures He wants you to dive into. Then spend some time digging into the Word of God and then ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you how you should apply it to your life.

John 12: 12-16
When the great crowd that had come to the feast heard  that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took palm branches and went out to meet him, and cried out: “Hosanna! “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel.”

Isaiah 50: 4-7
Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear; // The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.

Philippians 2: 6-11
Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Mark 14: 1-15, 47
The poor you will always have with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them, but you will not always have me.// Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will.” // Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” //  It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.”

In the Palm Sunday readings we hear many stories about Jesus’ sacrifice for us. And in that story we watch Peter deny Jesus three times. We know it’s coming. We know he’ll do it before the cock crows twice. What’s more is we know that Jesus even tells Peter that he will fail Him - and so Peter himself even knew it was coming.

Instead of being disheartened by this I actually find it encouraging.

Think about it: Jesus’ hand-picked disciple, who knew Jesus in the flesh, who loved Jesus, who believed Jesus, who followed Him, and who was even given the “heads up” by Jesus himself that he was about to fail Jesus still had a hard time following Jesus.

Why I find this encouraging: Even Jesus’ disciples made mistakes.

Peter failed Jesus even though he knew him personally and God revealed Himself to his very face. He was constantly in His presence learning God’s message and living with God for God. And yet he still wasn’t a perfect follower.

When a challenging moment came to pick God over something else (money, vanity, self-interest) even Jesus disciples chose themselves instead of Him.

But what is even more encouraging is that Peter doesn’t use the shame he felt in failing Jesus to hide away from the world forever, to think he wasn’t worthy and therefore no longer try to follow Him. No! What did he then do? Peter recognized his failings and then worked hard to be better disciple. He proclaimed the Gospel and helped build the church.

Day 41 Monday March 30 - [F] No desserts or treats today

I skipped this day for reasons I will explain below.

Day 42 Tuesday March 31 - [S] Buy dog or cat food for an animal shelter (deliver on Saturday)

Today I will just convey a message from Bishop Zubik which was a message of God’s mercy. His homily was about forgiving others - showing them the same mercy that God shows us. And to always remember that because Jesus died on the cross for us he took on our sins and gained us God’s forgiveness. Through Jesus our sins are “Forgiven. Forgotten. Forever.” With this message Bishop Zubik stressed: “Hear it. Believe it. Embrace it.”

Day 43 Wednesday April 1 - [P] Kindness
Day 44 Holy Thursday April 2 - [F] No TV or screens today
Day 45 Good Friday April 3 - [S] Plan a tree or flowers
Day 46 Holy Saturday April 4 - [S] Deliver animal items
Day 47 Easter Sunday April 5 - [P] Resurrection

Over the last week we were in and out of the hospital 3x with Nora…. I meant to eventually get around to writing reflections but I never did. I wanted my Holy Week reflections to be so perfect for Holy Week, but that all got tossed to the wayside as we focused on our little bean and prayer.

I hope that everyone had a Blessed Easter! We did! - All we wanted was to have Nora healthy enough to go to mass with my family and we were able to! (PS. She is better now, just had a terrible bout of croup.)

Let's Meet in the Middle

By Maureen Kennedy Macel

Have you ever looked around the pews at mass and have it look as though Moses had parted the Red Sea? I have often wondered why it is that people like to sit snug on the ends and avoid the middle. Perhaps it is because they don’t want to be stuck in the middle if they have to get up or go. Perhaps they have claustrophobia. Perhaps you are one of those people.

If you are I challenge you to reflect on why it is you like to sit on the end. Why are you sitting there? Is it because you want to be able to leave whenever you want? If you are going to take the time to go to mass don’t you think you should fully commit to being at mass for as long as the mass will take? Give that hour-or-so to God and give it to Him fully. Do not hold yourself back.

I challenge you to slide down and sit in the middle.

The first time you do it it may be hard. You may not like it. But try it and truly commit to being at mass. Do not look forward to the end when you can rush out. Try it a few times and watch what happens. How do you feel?

Take it from a former end sitter - there is a peace, a calmness, a feeling of community you get when you seat yourself in the middle of that parted sea and bridge the gap between the left and right.  You are not worried about being crowded in. You welcome it. You are not worried about when the mass will end. You embrace its length.

Have you ever gone into mass late and wished someone had sat in the middle so that you could easily enter a pew? Wouldn’t it have been nice to see a welcoming row where you didn’t have to squeeze past an end sitter or cause them to begrudgingly slide to the middle? When you sit in the middle willingly you make your row feel so welcoming. It has been my experience that when I sit in the middle my row fills up with more people. And that translates into me feeling more connected to the mass community which makes the communal experience of the mass all the greater.

Mass is not a solo event held just for you to come and check in with God, to cross Him off your “to do” list. No! Mass is a communal event meant for you to come and check in with God and other believers and feel God’s love then live God’s love. Through mass God gives you a place to share in your love of God with others who want to experience God too. The point isn’t to “go to mass”. The point is to celebrate mass.

How better to celebrate than to sit in the middle, commit yourself to being fully present during the mass, create a welcoming community, and close the parted sea?

Lent 2015: Week 5 Reflections

"A Good Life" presents a special Lenten blog post by Maureen Kennedy Macel (Week 5):

Day 30 Thursday March 19 - [S] Draw a picture for someone and mail it

RO: Three simple ways to better follow Jesus: (1) Know Jesus - Immerse ourselves in the holy word. // (2) Talk to Him - Speak to Him. He is a real person who truly cares about you. He doesn’t just love you, He actually likes you, and He wants a relationship with you. // (3) Listen to Him - Quiet our hearts and allow Him to speak to us. We are a unique and unrepeatable creation from God. And so God will speak to us in a very unique and unrepeatable way, that only we would know and understand. // We have to give Jesus the opportunity and the time to speak to us after we speak to Him.

2 Samuel 7: 4-5A, 12-14A, 16
I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me.

Romans 4: 13, 16-18, 22
Brothers and sisters: It was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham and his descendants that he would inherit the world, but through the righteousness that comes from faith.

The drawing I was inspired to make ended up being a message:

I love you.
         -God
Day 31 Friday March 20 - [Friendship]

RO: He came so that we could be with Him forever. With Joy He embraces the cross. With joy He heads to this hour of glorification. Though he knows the suffering that it means He joyfully embraces that cross. // He is choosing every step of the way to become a living sacrifice. He is choosing every step of the way to win us back. Because He values you and He values me. You are worth it. You are worth it for Jesus to embrace the cross because that’s how much He loves you. Though the hour that was coming for Him brought pain, agony, and even death - you were worth all of it. Because that hour also meant that you would able to spend eternity with Him in heaven.

Wisdom 2: 1A, 12-22
“Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him.” These were their thoughts, but they erred; for their wickedness blinded them, and they knew not the hidden counsels of God

John 7: 1-2, 10, 25-30
“You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true. I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.”

Funny how we often can readily forgive our friends for transgressions simply because they are our friends.  But whoever offends us but are not our friends we hold it against them and do not like to forgive.

Pray that we can treat each person as though they are are friend.

Day 32 Saturday March 21 - [F] Eat very simple meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

RO: You have a soul and that is the thing that God values in you. He values all parts of you, but He values your soul the most. Do you ever think about what your soul can do for you? // Get in touch with your soul because that is the thing that God wants to get in touch with you. // God desires and loves us so much that he will even get rid of the biggest stumbling block - death itself. // Human death will not stop Him from loving you. // The equation is Jesus - Jesus has to be that bridge between death and eternal life. Get in touch with your soul and let Jesus enter more deeply into your soul. Because if He is there you might die on earth but in Jesus you will have eternal life.

Jeremiah 11: 18-20
searcher of mind and heart

John 7: 40-53
Never before has anyone spoken like this man.

I saw God in a piece of bread yesterday.

Let me explain what I mean:

I was at the St. Bernard Fish Fry with Bridgette, Dan, a friend of a friend who I just happened to run into, and someone Bridgette just met a few days ago.

As I put my styrofoam plate down onto the table it cracked and sent my roll rolling to the floor. I hadn’t planned on eating it since I hadn’t gotten anything that would go on the bread (I really don’t know why I was given bread). And so it wasn’t disappointing that it fell onto the floor.

I was about to throw it away and then I thought that Nora would like to feed the birds with it so I put it in my pocket. Later on during our conversation I jokingly offered Dan my pocket bread and took it out of my pocket to give it to him.

This person that Bridgette just recently met hadn’t eaten his food, and Bridgette asked if anything was wrong. He didn’t quite know how to explain why he wasn’t eating, but since I had recently shown that I had pocket bread he was able to say that “Like her I will put it in my pocket and take it home.” After that Dan offered up his to-go box and that was that.

But in thinking back on it he had seemed a bit uneasy and perhaps was trying to figure out how to inconspicuously not eat his fish and get it into pocket without us really noticing. But since there were four of us there it was kind of difficult to do either of those things.

And that is why I saw God in a piece of bread - All of this happening was meant to put this person at ease.

Day 33 Sunday March 22 - [S] Write someone a Thank You note

RO: Jesus had to die because that is what the Father planned. This is how God was going to redeem us and restore us in relationship with Himself. He sent Himself here in the form of a Son to take on the weight of sin and the punishment for sin and to die, lay down His life, so that we can be healed. // He had to die to save us.

Jeremiah 31: 31-34
I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts;  I will be their God, and they shall be my people. // All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says the LORD

Hebrews 5: 7-9
Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered

John 12: 20-33
Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. - John 12: 26

I wrote someone a Thank You note on Tuesday. Not that I should feel “Thank you’ed” out but I kind of do? Yes, that’s accurate. Be that lame or not (it is) - it is how I felt today and so I just couldn’t bring myself to writing a Thank You note. ...Until 10pm when I forced myself to. (PS. I wrote that last sentence before actually doing it as a motivator to stop being so pathetic.)

Originally my reflection was going to be about what I wrote about (thanking the strawberry farmer and picker for delicious strawberries), but then I realized this:

God wants us to be thankful. He wants us to look around at His creation and appreciate it and remember that everything in the world is not here because of chance, but because He created it. How thankful we should feel for everything every day! How much beauty and wonder there is to be grateful for!

(Like Mr. T never said: “Be grateful for God is great, fool!”)

When we give thanks it should be heartfelt and genuine. We can’t force ourselves to be thankful when we don’t feel it, but what we can do is practice giving thanks. Be conscious of the beauty around you and remember where that beauty comes from - God. When we take the time to be conscious of what God has given us we give ourselves more opportunities to feel genuinely thankful. And when we practice feeling thanks we practice giving thanks and we become better at saying “Thank You” - not only to God but also to everyone around us. Spreading Thanks spreads Love and God is Love.

There are so many things to be thankful for! Yes, there are challenges. We can cite examples of things we aren’t thankful for. But if we turn those things and struggles over to God and still work to see the good things there is always something we can be thankful for.

Even if your time with God and remembering to be thankful is one sentence long (like saying “Thank you God for this beautiful day!” when you see the sunshine or a pretty snowfall or a fresh rain) that is still an encounter with God and you make God happy.

Let us go forth and be thankful. Thanks be to God!

Day 34 Monday March 23 - [P] God
RO: We call Jesus “Emmanuel” - “God with us”. Jesus comes to show “See God is with you. God hasn’t forgotten you. And God wants to save you again.” // If you knew that there was a great power source that was waiting to set you free from all your sin, from all of your distress, why wouldn’t you tap into it? I pray this Lent that you and I can all find the power of God to

Daniel 13: 1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62
O eternal God, you know what is hidden and are aware of all things before they come to be.

John 8: 1-11
Go, and from now on do not sin any more.

God you are beautiful. You have so much love to share that it is eternal and infinite. Let me be worthy of that love. May I live my life according to your ways. May I remember to serve you above myself. Let me remember to see the beauty you put before me. Let me remember to see the beauty you put within me. Let me remember to share that beauty and love with others. Amen.

Day 35 Tuesday March 24 - [F] Do not use toys that require electricity or batteries

RO: Jesus comes to us. He longs to be with us. // In our greatest weakness, our greatest disease, longings and wants, Jesus comes to us and longs to be with us. Let us accept that reality; allow Jesus to come and be with us. And let’s take that and go and be with others. Go and love others. Go and share Christ’s love with other people.

Numbers 21: 4-9
with their patience worn out by the journey, the people complained against God and Moses

John 8: 21-30
Jesus said to them, “...the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world.”

Hearing the news often makes me feel sad. It can be a reminder of how precious and momentary life can be. Life is but a moment of time. Life can end at any moment. But that shouldn’t cause us to cower in fear. Though we die we can find eternal life in He who was sent into the world so that we may live. So how are we living our lives to ensure that though we die we will find eternal life?

Day 36 Wednesday March 25 - Learn something about another country or culture

RO: [TBD]

Isaiah 7: 10-14 8: 10
The Lord himself will you you this sign: the virgin will be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us!”

Hebrews 10: 4-10
We have been consecrated through the offering of the Body of Jesus Christ once for all

Luke 1: 26-38
Mary said, “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

“Say ‘Yes’ to God.” is often said. But today I heard it phrased this way: “Give God your Yes.” (That’s Fr. Joe, by the way.)

How beautifully put! I don’t think I can explain how hearing it that way made (and makes) me feel. But there was just something about it.

Perhaps because with “Say ‘Yes’ to God” this seems to imply we are waiting around for that clear moment when God gives us the opportunity to say “Yes” to Him and that we’ll be able to recognize that moment as a clear “yes or no” decision point. But that is not how God works. Those opportunities don’t come with God on a puffy white cloud speaking in a loud voice saying, ‘Hey Maureen, it’s God. How about doing this? Yes or No?”. Wouldn’t that make saying “Yes” to God so easy? (Yes!) No, these moments come in the form of an old man carrying groceries and recognizing he could use a ride home. Or in helping someone pick up something they have dropped. Or holding the door for the person behind you.

“Give God your ‘Yes’” I think I am drawn to this because it implies I need to be active, that I have a never ending supply of “Yeses” to give out, and God is always there just waiting for my “Yes”. And the “Yes” is the clear choice. There really is no debating “Am I going with a ‘Yes’ or a ‘No’ right now?” I’m not waiting around for God to clearly say “Hey Maureen, it’s God. Yeah, this is me trying to work here and calling on you to do your part. Are you in?” Instead I am here, ever-present for the Lord. Ready to jump into action. I am looking for God speaking to me in all things and so I actively live to give God my “Yes" -- “Yes?” “Yes!”

Lent 2015: Week 4 Reflections

"A Good Life" presents a special Lenten guest blog post by Maureen Kennedy Macel (Part 4):

Day 23 Thursday March 12 - [F] No TV or screens today (except for homework)

RO: What does it mean to live forever? To have no time constraint at all. Time would really be on our side. We are invited by God into eternity. // Eternal life with God is life of the very best kind. That’s what we’re invited into, but it is not necessarily what we’re all going to get. We are invited but we have to respond. // We are either going to have an eternity of life with God  - or life without God, apart with him, and that would be life of the very worst kind.

Jeremiah 7: 23-28
Thus says the LORD:  This is what I commanded my people: Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper.

Luke 11: 14-23
Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters

This was harder than it should have been today. It took a lot of talking myself out of giving up to stay away from a screen today after work. It forced me to do something else - and just sit and relax quietly. During my “relaxing” every few minutes I felt like I wanted to give up. It must have been the athlete in me that helped me always say no, plus some prayers praying to not be weak over such a stupid thing to be weak over.

What good is a challenge if all you do is give up when it’s challenging?

And so instead I sat and updated my journal - which I haven’t done for 1.5 months. I could remember about two weeks and random things here and there. It was definitely worth denying myself the screen because I will now always have those two weeks “remembered” where I otherwise would sure enough have soon forgotten, similar to how I am sure everything I would have otherwise seen on a screen would be forgotten by tomorrow.

Though should I take solace in the fact that this was after 1.5 hours of working on my Easter wood project? So I was both productive and not in front of a screen. Or should I be disheartened that I only had a wee bit of night left to make it thru and struggled every moment?

Day 24 Friday March 13 - [S] Invite someone to your house for dinner

RO: We live in a world that is dark and scary. // But we are called as Christians to be lights shining like stars in the midst of that world. // Judge less - we have the freedom to love people regardless of who they are and how they are acting. We are not the judge of the world so we can love without having to worry that we love someone too much. We are never going to get to the judgement seat of heaven and have God say, “Sorry, you just loved too much.” // Pray - Pray with someone else. What if you said “Can I pray for you?” and you just did it right then? // Invite - We have all kinds of access to the lights of Christ. What if you invited some people into that light? // God is calling you to be the light to the world this Lent. Can you do it?

Hosea 14: 2-10
“I am like a verdant cypress tree”– Because of me you bear fruit! Let him who is wise understand these things;
let him who is prudent know them. Straight are the paths of the LORD, in them the just walk, but sinners stumble in them.

Mark 12: 28-34
One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?”
Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,  with all your mind,  and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Last Sunday I had huge hopes for myself for this one. Come day of what did I do? Took the lazy way out. Bridgette was coming over anyways so I invited her to dinner … that counts? I mean, we ate together. It was nice. We definitely had a nice conversation. But I think this barely counts as doing.

Day 25 Saturday March 14 - [Journey]

RO: Snow covers everything. // The earth is going to warm up and this snow will not just stay on the top it will melt and become water and it will get into the earth. That’s when it changes the earth. // Will you let your hard heart soften? Will you let your cold heart melt? And will you let the word of God, that descends from the heavens, accomplish the purpose for which He descended? To make you not just look nice but to make you new.

Hosea 6: 1-6
For it is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings

Luke 18: 9-14
But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’ I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

I realized as I lay in bed last night that I felt content. I think it is the contentment that I have been searching for. To not want things. To be happy with what I have. This feeling felt so freeing and peaceful. I wanted that feeling to last, and if it couldn’t last I at least wanted it to be repeated. That feeling lasted about one minute, but it was a very blissful minute. Then in the morning it’s not that I forgot the feeling -- rather, I was motivated by it -- but it’s that the day came and life came and I went out into the day to do what needed to be done.

This Lent and taking a step back in life though has been the key I have been searching for. I feel like I have unlocked a way to not perhaps be content but to find contentment. To pause. Slow down. Purposely remove myself from the “daily grind”. Get in touch with my spiritual self more fully. Live with God ever present in my heart and mind.

While is ideal to always enter every day with God on your heart and mind and then proceed to keep Him there in everything you do -- that can get to be quite challenging! Depending on the day you might have to really work on it. And I think I am someone who thinks she generally does a decent job at keeping God closeby and living the way He would want me to live, and yet it is still hard. And this Lent has shown me that no matter how “on the path” we may think we are there is always room for improvement.

Our journey in life should be to become like God. And the fact that we fail often and always have room for improvement is not something that should make us give up. Rather: What an opportunity! We are here, struggling day to day to be more Christ-like. And who do we have to look to for an example of how to live? Jesus! Jesus was the most impressive role model. And it’s not that His holiness should intimidate us but rather it should give us comfort that He lived as man, struggled just like you and I, and still chose God. And by choosing God, by sacrificing His own life for us, we can come to know just how great God is. This earth is temporary so on our journeys we need to work hard to not succumb to the day-to-day, because in striving to become like God we will achieve eternal life with God.

Update: On Sunday I popped into a store to just buy socks for Nora. Of course they put the baby stuff in the way back so you have to walk thru everything. I was not tempted to look around the store at all. I didn’t want things. On the way out though I could already feel that contentment starting to slip. I saw one shirt and was like “ooo that’s nice” -- and in that moment I got to see how easy it is to forget how great following God so fully makes me feel.

Is it easy to get distracted by the meaningless things in this world and lose perspective? All too easily so! Being close to God is something that I need to work on every day. He is always there with me, I need to make sure I stay with Him. Being conscious of how I live each day is half the battle. Because God makes me aware of my weakness He has given me a better opportunity to choose Him. I can pause, realize where I might be going off the path He prefer I was on, and then work to choose Him in all things.

Day 26 Sunday March 15 - [F] No snacks between meals all day

RO: I can’t see God right now. I feel so alone. // The key to seeing Christ in relationships is that power to be able to be vulnerable with each other. // Seeing Jesus in others is about being vulnerable to each other. In those dark moments of life - all those anxieties, hurts, fears - they really do keep us from seeing Christ in others. // How do we see Christ? What are those things that keep us from really seeing Him? // Lord. we want to see you. Teach us to show you our own hearts so that we can see yours.

2 Chronicles 36: 14-16, 19-23
Early and often did the LORD, the God of their fathers, send his messengers to them,  for he had compassion on his people and his dwelling place. But they mocked the messengers of God, despised his warnings, and scoffed at his prophets, until the anger of the LORD against his people was so inflamed  that there was no remedy.

Ephesians 2: 4-10
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.

Not eating is a struggle for me. I ate breakfast and a late brunch and by 2pm I was already finding it difficult to not eat. I ate dinner at 5:30 and even had a late dinner at 9:30 (everyone eats four square meals a day, right?) which is when Ryan finally ate his dinner. Even so I felt hungry.

And today I risked just thinking about myself and that I was hungry. Fortunately I remembered more about the larger picture than my miniscule existence. If I think I am hungry after just three hours of not eating what do people who are actually hungry feel like? And why I don’t do more to “feed the hungry”?

I have a blessed life of food when I need it. I have the luxury of going “hungry” by choice and can immediately end my physical hunger whenever I choose. Even during the night I looked forward to the morning when I would break my fast, but again I am fortunate in that I have plenty to eat whenever I want it. (Being too lazy to make something on the other hand when “we have nothing to eat” is just laziness… and hyperbole.)

It was a coincidentally convenient time for a letter to arrive from the Light of Life Rescue Mission about providing meals this Easter season. The message from God today was very clear and an actual message: “Turn this [F] day into an [A] day - Donate!”

For $2.34 I can provide a meal for a hungry, homeless person. How simple! How cheap! How can I not?

This Easter I eat in spirit with my less fortunate brothers and sisters. But I am doing it virtually and I know if I was in person I would not put a price tag on the meal - whoever needed to eat would eat - there would be no table big enough and God would provide me with the fun challenge to just give what I had for Him. But here I am doing it online and I have to pick how many (or more accurately, how few) I will feed. I can justify to myself that feeding one is better than feeding none, but I know what I do cannot be enough to meet the need.

But fortunately God knows this and He is not asking me to solve this problem for everyone. He is asking me to simply “do”. And if I respond to God’s call then what I am doing is enough - no matter how big or how small. It is not the degree that matters but rather the fact that “I did”. Because I am not alone in doing. I have brothers and sisters around me who also “do for the Lord”. It may not be everyone’s call to respond in this way because God speaks to us in many ways and calls us each according to where He knows we need to go. But I know this is where He has called me today and so I will humbly follow. God is the Light of Life!

Day 27 Monday March 16 - [S] Give someone real or paper flowers

RO: One of the defining characteristics of human beings is glory. // What is interesting about God is that He takes this desire for glory and He shifts it a little bit and gives us an interesting example of what he sees as glory. // The most glorious thing that has ever happened in the history of humanity was the death and resurrection of Jesus. When Jesus was hanging on the cross that was glory. // Death is not something we need to fear or flee from. He has totally twisted it. Now death has become a source of glory. // It is only by putting on the mind of Christ, by following Him, by saying “Yes” to him, and actually dying to ourselves and becoming His disciple that we achieve glory. // Christ understands that if you die with Him you also rise with Him. // The most glorious people in the world are those in heaven. Let’s be glorious.

Isaiah 65:17
Thus says the LORD: Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; The things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create;

John 4: 43-54
Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.”

All day I thought over who to give flowers to. I planned on just making some flowers too, mainly because it would be cheaper. But in thinking on it I came to realize that real flowers were what was needed today. And once I came up with the person it was even more clear that real flowers would be the perfect gift. I did torment myself all day trying to think of someone. And no it wasn’t for the overabundance of people I wanted to give flowers to. (Which I found to be terribly sad! Shouldn’t I have lots of people I would love to give flowers to?) But of my short list of fluctuating uncertainty I couldn’t settle on any that just felt right. I spent most of my time trying to figure out just where I was called to give them today.

But once I realized the “who” I was invigorated and sprung to action. I got up, went to the store, bought flowers specifically for this person, and then called them to let them know I was coming over. The who was my Mom-in-law. She and my Dad-in-law are always doing amazing things for me, Ryan, and Nora and I think we do a pretty paltry job of showing them our thanks. We say “Thank you” and by all means we mean it, but I realized in getting these flowers that we do do a very, very poor job of expressing thanks in meaningful ways -- like in a bouquet of simple flowers.

There is love in action not just in words (see Day 21). God shows me all the time how through actions just how much He loves me. I need to remember to express my gratitude towards others in the same way.

I called my Mom-in-law to say I would be over in 10 minutes. She said my Dad-in-law had just headed out he could swing by. I said I was out and that I could just swing by. Then she said he was heading to the Rite Aid. Which was amazingly awesome because I was at the dollar store (to buy a vase for the flowers and some Snickers for my Dad-in-law) and that store is attached/next door to the Rite Aid!

I finished up and went outside and saw his car in the parking lot. I stood outside the Rite Aid door and waited a few minutes until he came out. My Mom-in-law had called him to let him know I might see him, so he wasn’t surprised. But he was surprised by what I had in my hands. He asked me what it was for and I told him it was because they are so wonderful to us all the time. And then I also explained that the Lenten Calendar said to buy someone flowers today. I had to give the calendar credit because this was not a truthy altruism today; I did have to have a calendar prompt me to do the obvious. And my saying the “calendar said to” I could see this made better sense to him.

But this Lent is “working” because I already have committed to myself that I will be doing this of my own accord in the coming months. I came to this decision during those moments of reflection while waiting in line to buy the flowers. I had this “aha!” moment of “You know you can just do this whenever you feel like it, right? This doesn’t have to be a planned activity. You should do stuff like this more.”

God is patient with me. He knows me. He knows I need this gentle nudging to follow Him more fully. He knows right now I am at a place where I need a calendar to help me better serve Him. But He also wants me to stand on my own and not only choose Him every day, in all things - the big and the small. But to choose Him and then share Him.

My hope for this Lent is that I grow better in remembering those simple acts of showing someone you love them. God gives us so many beautiful ways to bring His love into the world. We need to do our part in remembering that it isn’t always about “go big or go home” - some days we are called to do those big things (and we can pray that on those days we are bold enough to embrace God’s call with a loving “Yes”) and some days we are simply called to give someone flowers.
Part 2: It was comforting to hear this message in a homily: God knows that we are sinners. We will try and inevitably at times we will fail. Because we fail it doesn’t mean we should stop trying. God wants us always to continue to try. >> How applicable to my life! I fail at various times and in various ways, but I shouldn’t give up on myself and always continue to try because God doesn’t give up on me.

Day 28 Tuesday March 17 - [P] Service

RO: Christ came to die for our sins that we can be brought to new life. And if we want to do that we have to follow His footsteps. // Things of this world can be good, but there is something greater. // Christ can be your everything. We need to journey with Him. // Pray this prayer: God, stir my affections for you. Let me desire you above everything else of this world. Let me pursue you to death to new life.

Ezekiel 47: 1-9, 12
He said to me, “...Wherever the river flows, every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live, and there shall be abundant fish, for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh. Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow; their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail. Every month they shall bear fresh fruit, for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary. Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine.”

John 5: 1-16
One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be well?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your mat, and walk.” Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked.

This Gospel message is beautiful, but also a challenge. The message is about things happening in God’s time, not in our own. I’m sure if it was up to the ill man he would have chosen Jesus to heal him perhaps thirty-eight years sooner. But no, he had to be patient and suffer every day, wait and hope, every day being discouraged because his illness and weakness prevented him from accessing the waters he thought would heal him. And then at the proper time Jesus came and the answer did not reside in the waters of Bethesda, but within the healing waters of God’s love. Here is a man who for thirty-eight years wondered where God was for him in his life. And then God revealed himself to him and cured him.

What patience! I don’t even like waiting one week. I can’t imagine how hard every day must have been longing for being saved but never receiving the answer for years. But that’s just it: There was an answer and the answer was beautiful. We may have weaknesses, but if we continue to hope in the Lord we will receive the glory of God. We may long for it in this life, but at a minimum, if we are faithful, we will receive it in the next.

In moments of doubt and darkness and wondering where God is in the world we need to remember to cling to this -- God is there with us. We may not be able to see it. We may not understand. We may hope for Him to intervene. But we need to be patient and trust and hope in the Lord.

And what was the greater purpose and why this was the right time? Because this act by Jesus sets the Jewish leadership on their path of His persecution. And Jesus welcomes it! The Jewish leadership  wanted to persecute the man who performed the miracle, but the man did not know who cured him and what did Jesus do? Did he hide in the crowd to try to go unnoticed? No! Jesus sought the man out! He went to the man so that the man may know Him. The healed man should have gone and not sinned any more, as Jesus instructed, but being weak he instead then went and told the Jews exactly who had healed him. This is both disheartening and heartening. A man, literally just healed by Jesus and told to sin no more, immediately goes and sins (or at least I’d call turning Jesus over to his persecutors sinning; but perhaps I am incorrect in this judgment)! But the longer term result was the fact that Jesus died on the cross for us. Jesus did not shy away from staying on God’s path. He embraced it! He loved us so much that He put His Father above all else in this world, even His own life, and did God’s will.

Day 29 Wednesday March 18 - [F] Only water to drink today

RO: Are you following Jesus close enough to be seen with Him? To be somebody who is related to Him? To be a disciple? Or are you still keeping a distance from Him? Lent is about growing deeper in our faith and following Jesus more closely. And here is the greatest part: The Advocate, The Holy Spirit, helps us along our way. So pray that the Holy Spirit gives you an accurate description of who God is, fall in love with Him, become a fan, follow Him more closely this Lent.

Isaiah 49: 8-15
Thus says the LORD: In a time of favor I answer you, on the day of salvation I help you; // For the LORD comforts his people and shows mercy to his afflicted. But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.

John 5: 17-30
I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me

A homily message was this: Make peace with the fact that you are a human and because you are human you will make mistakes. It’s okay! Make peace with being a sinner. Forgive yourself. God knows that you are human and will make mistakes. God still loves you. (This is Fr. Joe again, by the way. Turns out I really love his homilies!)

How funny. As I got ready for bed on Day 27, after having written my reflection on the day, and feeling a bit down about my failings, I could hear in my head the voice of my sister Bridgette telling me all the nice things that I do and to not beat myself up over these things; giving me encouragement like she so often does. And then a list of the recent things I’ve done went thru my head. It made me actually smile. I felt good. I thanked God for His kindness. He helped me to remember those times when I chose Him and He let me know that it made Him happy.

It was a nice message that God doesn’t want me to just focus on the times that I fail. He wants me to take joy in the fact I am following Him as best I can. He wants me to be conscious of when I err because He wants me to get better at choosing Him. Because if I don’t keep Him in mind I won’t see the times when I have not chosen Him and He wants to give me the opportunity to come back to Him in the next thing I do.
